The Seagram Building is said to stand as one of the most notable examples of the functionalist aesthetic and a prominent instance of corporate modern architecture. It was designed as the headquarters for the Canadian distillers Joseph E. Seagram's & Sons with the assistance of Phyllis Lambert, the daughter of Samuel Bronfman, Seagram's CEO. It has the worst Energy Star rating of any building in New York.
These two buildings share more differences than similarities. First off, comparing size and stature, Villa Savoye is short and
stout and is much wider than the Seagram Building which is very tall and thin. Difference in setting and location is also very
different. Villa Savoye is located in France in a suburban like area surrounded by beautiful, fresh cut, vibrant green grass. The
setting is calm and peaceful where the Seagram Building is in the midst of the hustle and bustle of New York City. As far as time
period goes, Villa Savoye was completed in 1931 and the Seagram Building was completed in 1958 but neither of the buildings
show their age whether it be in architectural style or whether it be overall preservation of the buildings. Both look fairly modern
perhaps because they are both a product of the international architectural style. The incorporation of windows in both buildings is
a key feature of recognition and individuality of the two international style structures. While the Seagram Building's windows are
placed like almost any other building you would see in a large commercial area such as New York City, the Villa Savoye's
incorporation of windows gives the top layer of the structure a sense of movement and pattern. Geometric shapes and patterns
are prevalent within both pieces and create not only an architectural benefit but also an artistic signature look.
